About Free Day of Yoga (FDOY)

Free Day of Yoga Austin is a corporation dedicated to providing the gift of yoga to the community. We help to educate our community about the health and wellness benefits of yoga through interactive, participatory, and educational events in the Austin area. We offer our annual events at no charge to those attending.

Free Day of Yoga was created in 1998 by Charles MacInerney and  Sharon Moon. In 2000 Donna Belk took over organizing the event and was followed by Mary Esther Middleton, and then Castle Hill Fitness. This year, Charles MacInerney has agreed to take over organizing this event, with the help a host of wonderful volunteers and the support of he greater Austin community.

Over the past 28 years the Free Day of Yoga has blossomed into an event with thousands of participants each year attending yoga classes in Austin but also spread to dozens of other cities in Texas, California and other locations.

This event would not be possible without the generosity of the Austin Yoga Teachers and the enthusiasm of Austin yogis and yoginis in our town.

Our Mission

Free Day of Yoga was created to encourage people who have never tried yoga to take their first class; for practicing yogis to take this opportunity to try a different style or a new instructor.

“The Free Day of Yoga is our way of saying thank you to our community for supporting us in our quest to expand the awareness of this ancient practice.”

The wide variety of offerings – instructors, styles, and classes – on Free Day of Yoga means there is something for everyone! No matter how experienced, anyone can participate in the practice of yoga.

As a public yoga class teacher, she guides her students through breath, movement, and meditation in order to know themselves better and how they relate to the world.  As a yoga therapist, she takes the tools of yoga to an individual experience, creating custom yoga practices that help clients reach their personal goals in managing pain, healing injury, easing anxiety, and  improving sleep and digestion, among many other things. Jess’s keen eye for body mechanics, quick wit, easy laugh, and depth of understanding of the yogic teachings make her yoga classes and yoga therapy both informative and fun.
