Three Ways to Support Your Digestion This Season

It’s time to talk about it again: digestion.

Here we are in the treats, sweets, and overindulging season of the year. That’s ok! I’m all about it. And thankfully, there are some great Ayurveda (the science of life and longevity) and yoga techniques to support your gut health and get you through the season feeling good.

Here’s the three I’m practicing this season:

☝️Walk 100 steps after you eat.

This is an old Ayurvedic trick to help your digestion process after a meal, reducing bloating, gas, and indigestion.  It’s a helpful guideline–you don’t have to count the steps–but do take a leisurely stroll. Stroll with a soft gaze at the nature around you (if possible) and you get dopamine-boosting bonus points.

✌️Eat probiotics every day–three if you can!

This has been a game-changer for me. Just adding sauerkraut to my morning eggs has me feeling all sparkly inside from the get-go. A few sips of kombucha at lunch and a ½ cup of plain yogurt for a midday snack, and there’s three! You can bring in any of the yummy options out there, like kimchi, miso, tempeh, or pickled veggies. Any fermented foods will do! Just a few spoonfuls is fine–no need to make full meals of it. Just feed your biome and keep your digestive fire fed. If three is too much, do one or two. Anything helps!

🤟 Incorporate twists into your practice or workout.

It’s like wringing out your organs, squeezing and releasing for detox and blood flow. You can lie on your back with your knees bent and over to one side. You can sit and twist by turning to look way behind you. Or you can take your favorite standing poses and do the revolved version. Be as simple or as fancy as you like. Just be sure and twist both directions!

Above all else, the best thing you can do to support your digestion, immunity, and overall health, is manage your stress. Take pockets of time, half or full days if you can, to unplug, move your body, breathe deeply, enjoy nature, and listen to silence or good music. Sit on your meditation cushion, journal, draw, or simply daydream. Whatever calls to you and makes you say, “Heck YES!” is what you should consider. Set appointments with yourself, or add it to your calendar. Whatever it takes to prioritize balancing life this season!
