As I was sitting in my meditation this morning, I got to a nice, quiet place, and then suddenly I was flooded with ideas. I was bombarded with thoughts of how this can work, and that can change, and this problem get solved, and ideas just kept interrupting my quiet. I tried to say to the thoughts, “Good, let's think about that later… Let's think about that later.” And then I thought, “Hey! I'm having a creative impulse. Let's just sit with it! Let's let it percolate, because apparently that's what my system would like to do right now.” (I'm convinced there's a difference between distraction and inspiration, and I am trying to discern the difference between the two.)
After my inspiration-filled meditation, I started thinking about creativity itself. If you believe you're not a creative person, perhaps that's because we usually think of creativity as the creative arts. Maybe you don't paint, or sing, or write music.
But believe me when I say: We are all creators.
We all create. You create your life. You create your family. You create your environment. You create solutions to problems. You create new ways of doing things better.
I know this about you because you're human. And so you are endowed with ideas. Whether you consider your ideas coming from a Divine Source, or a muse, or simply your imagination coupled with all of your experience that you recognize as the creative Flow, there is a creative impulse within you.
This was the inspiration for class in Online Yoga Membership this week. (I consider yoga classes, sessions, and retreats my favorite creative outlets!) We coupled this intention of tapping into creative impulse with one of my favorite mantras:
Om namo ya namaha.
The best translation I've come across is that it is a mantra of respect, used as a means of offering humility to any force greater than ourselves. I've practiced this for chant for years in preparation for meditation, and I see it now as another effective tool to prepare ourselves to tune in, listen, and create. We open to inspiration when we call on a power greater than ourselves. This also means that when we step into the creative act, there is humility to it. Think of your idea like a child. They were given to you, but they are really not yours. They belong to the world. Recognizing this, there’s a sense of humility in saying, "Ah, this idea has come to me."

I believe that if you've been given an idea, and it's genuine and coming from the heart and is connected to Source, the material things you need and situations that need to come to pass will present themselves so that your idea will happen.
Maybe it's small, maybe it's big, maybe it's your whole life. But please know this: you are a creative person, and life is a creative art. Now go create!
Much love
